Pen and Ink Drawing of Summer Music Festival at Dusk

My pen and ink drawing is based on my experience of Bestival, a music festival in the summer of 2021 at Lulworth Castle in Dorset. This particular memory and picture differs greatly from the rest of my artwork as it features large crowds.

Following the Covid lockdowns of 2020/2021, this was my and probably many other spectators' first experience within a large social gathering. This picture is a reminder to me of the importance of collective experiences of connecting with other people and not taking liberty for granted.

I wanted to capture the magic and atmosphere of a music festival at dusk. Using a combination of light and shadow I wanted to create a sense of time passing. The composition of the drawing is split between the foreground solitary woman sitting down and the hustle and bustle of the crowds dancing beneath the fading light of the day.

The colour version has used warm tones and cold tints to enhance the dusk landscape and create a sensory experience with the moment.

The drawing is a perfect way to commemorate a special memory or enjoy live music's beauty. It is also a great conversation starter for any music lover.

    Additional notes:

    • The drawing could be described as "impressionistic" as it captures the overall atmosphere of the scene rather than every detail.
    • The focus on the woman in the foreground could be interpreted as a symbol of individuality or personal experience, set against the backdrop of the collective emmotions of the crowd.
    • The drawing could also celebrate music and its ability to unite people.
