A5 Colour postcard featuring a hand-drawn pen-and-ink view of Whitstable Beach at the end of the Crab & Winkle Way.
This A5 postcard is a miniature version of my original pen-and-ink drawing of the Whistable beach landscape. It's part of a series capturing the unique beauty and heritage of the North Kent Coast and Thames Estuary.
Pen & Ink Drawing (#23)
This artwork captures a quintessential scene at the end of the Crab & Winkle Way, where the historic trail meets Whitstable's vibrant waterfront. The Whitstable Oyster Co. boat rests on a beach of discarded oyster shells, nestled amongst weathered huts, a testament to the town's enduring connection to the sea.
A Trail Steeped in History:
The Crab & Winkle Way traces the path of a former railway line that once ferried passengers and cargo, including the prized Whitstable oysters, between Canterbury and the coast. This 7.6-mile route now offers a picturesque journey through woodlands and marshes, a testament to the area's natural beauty and industrial past.
Whitstable: A Haven for Oyster Lovers:
The trail's culmination at Whitstable Beach is a fitting end, as the town has long been synonymous with oysters. Since Roman times, Whitstable's oysters have been renowned for their exceptional flavour, drawing connoisseurs from far and wide. Today, the town's vibrant harbour, lined with seafood restaurants and colourful fishing boats, is a testament to this enduring legacy.
This artwork celebrates Whitstable's unique character, a place where history, nature, and culinary delights converge. It invites viewers to explore the Crab & Winkle Way, savour the taste of fresh oysters, and appreciate the town's enduring connection to the sea.
