Pen and ink drawing of Grove Ferry Canoe trip
This pen and ink drawing captures a family canoe trip along the River Stour at Grove Ferry in Canterbury.
Born from an accidental ink spill, this artwork almost didn't exist. After the ink bled through several pages, I asked my Instagram followers if I should salvage the mishap or discard the pages. Was this fate or simply chance? You decide.
This piece marks my first attempt at depicting the water's distortion caused by a boat's wake. It hints at my fascination with entropy, the second law of thermodynamics.
Much of my work explores themes of time and nostalgia, and I'm captivated by the challenge of capturing motion in high definition. While motion is often conveyed through blurring, I strive to achieve it through sharp, energetic mark-making, creating the illusion of movement within a single moment.
My mark-making is full of tension and contrast, avoiding traditional cross-hatching or stippling. I seek out contours in the subject to draw the viewer in. For example, the river's reflections mirror the wake's path as it curves around the canoe. This technique presents technical challenges, but I believe the resulting effect is well worth it.
